Chennai Dances

Early this year when I was in Chennai, I photographed a beautiful bharatanatyam dancer at a temple in Chennai. When I was scheduling the shoot and figuring out the location I remembered this temple that I had visited about 9 years back. Turns out the family knew the temple and we had our location.

I was hoping for beautiful old temple walls and had my fingers crossed it would have the red and white painted walls. Not only was the morning sun gorgeous, the walls were as I had wanted.

I absolutely loved the shoot and the photos. Thanks to my lovely dancer, her mom and her aunt ;)

Asian Geographic: Festival edition

Okay I am way back on old posts – this should have been posted so long ago but anyway here it is. Two of my photo stories was published in Asian Geographic: Festival edition which hit magazine stands around May 2011. Yep that’s how long I take to post stories – sigh ;) Check my Facebook page for faster updates and more photos ;)

It was a great moment for me and two get two stories featured was seriously an amazing feeling ;) Seeing your name in print is just priceless. Two stories on Thaipusam and a temple Kumbhabhishegam were featured.

A journey

I bought my first own digital camera in 2006 just before Chinese New year that year. It was just a point and shoot camera but oh what a lovely camera the Canon Powershot a620 was. The timing had also been to coincide with the Thaipusam celebrations that year.

So I have been documenting the festival that has been part of my life since perhaps from a year old. A festival very much a part of me and one I don’t seem to tire off.

Every year I try to see the festival in a fresher approach and I think I have managed to showcase that.

This year once again I had the honour to take renowned photographer Joe Mcnally, his assistant Drew Gurian as well as photographers, Daniel Capobianco and Michael Greenberg. I also got to take and meet my fellow flickr photographer Dink from Germany. As you can imagine I’ve been super excited and so pumped up, i’m still writing this eventhough i’ve been awake since 2 in the morning!

Thanks to the lovely souls and friends who continue to keep me in mind when opportunity comes crashing on our front doors. Its been a second round of fun and awesome shooting ;)

Shylah

I have a photo of them smilling at the camera but i love this shot - when they noticed me pointing the camera at them they immediately closed their faces - so i took a few shots and showed them -n they then decided to smile at the cam ;)

So adorable - btw happy ponggal everyone -inniya pongal nalvalthukal as well as Happy new year

I was away in Bali enjoying the beautiful island and lovely people

Kumbhabhishekam

The Sri Maha Kaliamman Temple kumbhabhishegam took place on 10 September 2010 which I agreed to sponsor.

A Maha Kumbhabhishekam is held either to formally consecrate a new Temple or reconsecrate an old one, which usually occurs at twelve-year intervals, following renovation, extensive cleaning and renewal.

The rites culminate with the priests' pouring sanctified water over the temple spires, each of which resembles an inverted pot, or kumbha. Leading up to the consecration, a number of rituals are performed by the sthapati (main temple architect) in charge of the construction or renovation.

This is an elaborate process that involves a sequence of religious procedures culminating in the Maha Kumbhabhishekam. Kumbha in this context refers to the crown or the topmost structure of a temple resembling a pot. Abhisheka refers to the ritual bathing or consecration.

A New Journey

I’ve known Dr Nalini and Gunaselan since they were kids as they’re my brother’s childhood friends. So I was absolutely psyched to be a part of their wedding celebrations after shooting Nalini’s sister Dr Punitha’s wedding celebration last year. So you’ll be seeing lots of this lovely and fun couple in the coming months with their even fun family. They know how to throw a celebration! ;p

The couple’s registration of marriage took place on a Saturday and was attended by close family members.

Thank god for doors and windows, as the temple is currently undergoing re-construction and everywhere we turned we’d find a rumble of construction material blocking the view.
